NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME I is the story of Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is discovered badly beaten in an alley by an older bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), who takes her into his home. As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood (portrayed in flashback by newcomer Stacy Martin). VOLUME I also stars Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen and Udo Kier.
NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME II picks up with the story of Joe’s adulthood, where her journey of self-discovery leads to darker complications. The film stars Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth and Jean-Marc Barr in addition to Gainsbourg, Skarsgård, Martin and LaBeouf.
NYMPHOMANIAC: VOLUME I and VOLUME II mark Lars von Trier’s follow-up to his critically acclaimed film, MELANCHOLIA (released by Magnolia in 2011), and is his third consecutive collaboration with Charlotte Gainsbourg. As widely reported, the films contain graphic depictions of sexuality to a degree unprecedented in a mainstream feature film.
A groundbreaking filmmaker for more than two decades, von Trier’s other films include ANTICHRIST, DOGVILLE, DANCER IN THE DARK and BREAKING THE WAVES. NYMPHOMANIAC is produced by Louise Vesth for Zentropa Entertainments.

“A PROVOCATION WORTH TALKING ABOUT. An obsessive, violent, and at times remarkably eccentric sex epic that is often brilliant and never simple-minded or dull. It remains formidable throughout its four-hour length and demanding to think about afterward.” – David Denby, The New Yorker
“A JOYOUS WORK OF FLAT-OUT GENIUS. It’s a blast, full of life and energy and ideas and humor and sexy naked bodies.” – John H. Richardson, Esquire
“IT’S EASY, AND SO VERY TEMPTING, TO DISMISS LARS VON TRIER AS A JOKE - IF ONLY HIS MOVIES WEREN’T SO BLOODY BRILLIANT. What’s most disquieting is how funny, tender, thoughtful, and truthful it is. THERE ARE MOMENTS THAT PROMPT SOMETHING CLOSE TO AWE.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe
"IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO DISMISS VON TRIER AS MERELY A HYPE-MONGER. He’s too damnably good a filmmaker for that. Watching “Nymphomaniac” is to be reminded of his superb skills in creating vivid worlds and characters on screen." – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
“IT’S A THRILLING, UPROARIOUS VISUAL AND INTELLECTUAL JOURNEY that surely will not please every viewer, but along the way breaks free of all established notions about what a respectable movie is and how it’s supposed to behave. Von Trier creates episodes of brilliant verbal repartee, ludicrous slapstick comedy and piercing emotional power, often overlapping.” – Andrew O’Hehir, Salon
“A HEAD-SPINNING MIX OF EMOTIONS, POWER DYNAMICS AND RAW PHYSICALITY. Lars von Trier understands the art and craft of making movies, the power the form is capable of combined with the skill to achieve it, about as well as anyone working in the world today. The film provides a shifting variety of insights, emotions, unexpected lightness and moments of visceral shock. It creates the sensation of having too much and wanting more.” – Mark Olsen, LA Times
“UNFORGETTABLE. A cinematic orgy that’s rollickingly comic and inventive about the telling of its tale.” – Jake Coyle, AP
“A MESMERIZING MIND GAME.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
“IT ENDS UP BEING A RATHER BRILLIANT FILM.” – Tricia Olszewski, Washington City Paper
“A TANTALIZING, OCCASIONALLY FUNNY, DEEPLY NEUROTIC MEMOIR OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE.” – Richard Corliss, Time
“YOU’RE UNLIKELY TO TURN AWAY.” – Manohla Darghis, NY Times
“**** A WILD, SPRAWLING ORGY OF THE SUBLIME AND THE RIDICULOUS.” – Dave Calhoun, Time Out New York
“What's more shocking than exposed flesh is a film that tries to be about sexuality instead of just exploiting it.” – Marc Mohan, The Oregonian
“NYMPHOMANIAC MAKES AN IMPRESSION. Von Trier plays with our expectations. He provokes and challenges us. And that makes “Nymphomaniac” far more than porn.” – Charles Ealy, Austin American-Statesman
“WHO NEEDS 50 SHADES OF GREY WHEN YOU’VE GOT LARS VON TRIER? A provocative, nuanced and even empathetic account of one woman’s attempts to understand and perhaps reconcile the factors that are bound up in sex. IT’S THE WORK OF A FLAMBOYANT SALESMAN AND A MAJOR ARTIST.” – Ethan Alter, Film Journal International
“A FEROCIOUSLY ENTERTAINING MAGNUM OPUS. A SHAPE-SHIFTING, CARNAL AND INTELLECTUAL THRILL RIDE OF A MOVIE. A veritable Brandenburg Concerto of disparate genres and moods masterfully blended into a seamless whole.” – Scott Foundas, Variety
“**** HILARIOUS, VISUALLY ARRESTING AND INTENSE.” – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic
“If it weren't for the explicit sexual encounters, this could be an Ibsen or a Strindberg play.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
“**** IT’S A BIG, OPEN FILM, one that finds von Trier prankish and, at times, disarmingly sincere.” – Matt Prigge, Metro NY
“The foundation of the film is a lengthy conversation that wouldn’t be out of place in a Bergman film. von Trier is on his game here. Gainsbourg and Skarsgård are splendid.” – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star-Tribune
“Von Trier does a masterful job of presenting Joe's life as dominated by and, in large parts, electrified by sex.” – Ela Bittencourt, Slant
“INDECENTLY SMART AND PROVOCATIVE. Like an issue of Playboy you read for the smut and the articles.” – Justin Chang, Variety
“Filthy, often funny, and kind of fabulous.” – Dennis Dermody, Paper
“Hang on to your seat back, your Bible, or the hand of a friend. Nymphomaniac ravishes the brain and leaves you begging for more.” – Xan Brooks, The Guardian
“VON TRIER’S BEST FILM IN OVER 20 YEARS.” (Vol 1) – John Semley, Slant
“CONSIDER ME SEDUCED.” – Amy Nicholson, Village Voice
“THRILLING. A MAGNUM OPUS.” – David Fear, Esquire
“PROVOCATIVE, FUNNY, SMART, WRY AND CHALLENGING. A remarkable project brimming with bold performances.” – Mark Adams, Screen
